Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker – Co-Writer Chris Terrio Talks Bringing Back Lando Calrissian

Tomorrow will mark two weeks until Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters, the film that will be the end to both Disney’s sequel trilogy and the Skywalker saga. For what seems like an insurmountable task, J.J. Abrams and company have enlisted the help of an old friend to a galaxy far, far away.

To help with this task, Disney has brought back another beloved character from the original trilogy in Lando Calrissian, played of course by actor Billy Dee Williams. Co-writer on the film, Chris Terrio, recently spoke with Uproxx and talked about the decision to bring Lando back, you can check out what he had to say below.

“Well, one of the ideas that J.J. and I talked about early on was the idea of Rey and Finn and Poe having to live up to the greatest generation. And that feels like it’s anxiety, but also an opportunity that’s in the film right at the moment when Rey’s eyes light up when she hears about Luke Skywalker. You can see she has grown up with these ideas of great figures in her head. And so the question of this film is can this generation live up to the greatest generation? Can we do the kind of heroic things that they did? So when we began talking about that, the other surviving member of that generation is Lando. And he’s just someone beloved by both me and J.J. from our childhoods. And when Billy Dee was game to do it, we thought we’d be crazy not to work with him. And just the sheer thrill of sitting in your screenwriting program and writing the word “Lando” and then writing lines beneath it? That alone, as you can imagine, sends shivers up your spine. And also there’s the pressure and nervousness, how do you write the words of a legend? Because you can never write a character as though they are a legend.”

I for one am of the opinion that Disney misused the original trio (and Chewy) of the old trilogy. Now all are gone, either on the screen and unfortunately in real life. I hope Lando gets better treatment than the other three were given. My feelings about the sequel trilogy aside, I hope this last installment is one that does wrap up the saga in a cohesive manner, I want Abrams and company to succeed, I truly do.
