Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker To Give Us Finn’s Origin Details

I know it’s not a popular thing to say these days, but I think the new trilogy of Star Wars films has done amazing work with their character arcs over the course of two movies so far. Each film has seen our leads grow in very specific ways over the course of their runtimes, never growing stagnant, and usually not taking the easy way out with a lot of the potential storylines.

Finn is one of the characters who has had interesting arcs in his films. Star Wars: The Force Awakens saw him regain his humanity outside of the Stormtrooper uniform and learn to care about someone outside of him. The Last Jedi saw him learn to care about causes outside of his immediate sphere of influence, and find a reason to actually join the fight against the First Order, rather than just trying to avoid it.

But what about the third film? Where will we see him go? According to a new Vanity Fair piece, not only will we see him grow as a character, we will get some insight into how he turned into the Stormtrooper we saw him as in The Force Awakens.

“It is part of the story of this one,” director Abrams told the outlet. “And it was alluded to in Episode VII, but there’s a bit more light shed on that in this one.”

But Finn won’t be the only one.

“I would say that each of the characters get more light shed on their histories,” Abrams added. “I’m not saying we get full, exhaustive downloads on all of their childhoods and every major step that got them to where they are. But there are a lot of questions about Finn’s past, about Poe’s past, obviously Rey and Kylo, and then some of the new characters we meet.”

Abrams continued, saying that “Endings are very difficult because they need to take everything that’s come before, in this case eight films prior, and draw it to a close. So I wanted to make sure in addition to the central story, the main character or characters, I wanted to make sure that you felt that when you were done with this film, you felt like you had some more insight into all of them. That was really important to us.”

I’m sure Finn fans will be happy about this, as was John Boyega. As the actor revealed on Twitter a few weeks back, he was adamant that Finn got more involved in the core story this time around.

While I’ve enjoyed his arc, I know there are plenty of people haven’t like the goofiness in which he was characterized, considering his tragic past as a Stormtrooper. Maybe we’ll get some extra insight and justification to it all in the new film.

What do you think of these comments from Abrams? What do you hope to see from Finn in the new film? Let us know your thoughts down below!
