Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Trailer Breakdown

I am sure you have all spent the weekend watching the trailer for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker more than once. As we always do and thoroughly enjoy we have gone through that new trailer with a fine toothcomb and brought you some screen shots to discuss and theorise over. So let’s not waste any time getting into it, just like Lando didn’t waste any time taking the Falcon back over Han’s dead body just like he said all those years ago in Solo. Yeeee Hawwww!

The Desert Chase

Of course if you have seen the trailer you know that Rey seems to be concentrating while we hear a voice over from none other than Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker. Luke is talking about how Rey (we assume) is now all that’s left of the Jedi and how she must face this fight that is to come.

Here we can see very clearly that Rey has repaired Anakin’s lightsaber as she ignites it and begins to run from the ship which is chasing her down.

As the ship gets to her she pulls of a Force enabled back slip and we’d assume she’ll be cutting a hole right through the top of that Tie Fighter. This ship looks very similar to Kylo Ren’s Silencer from The Last Jedi, but it’s definitely different. Kylo’s old ship didn’t have the red trimming on the front of the cockpit for one. We assume from the next shot that Kylo is the one piloting this ship, but that’s not a definite.

The final thing to note here is that we think this scene is a bit longer than perhaps this teaser trailer makes it seem. Fans have already compared the shots and it seems likely that this chase covers a bit more ground than it seems as the backgrounds do not match from shot to shot. Best guess is that Rey is chased and manages to avoid Kylo once or twice as he comes back around, the final time being the one where she backflips over him ready to cut it open. We will also guess this is on Tattooine, for reasons we will get to later.

The Snow Planet

We don’t see much of this planet, just a few shots spread throughout the trailer, but we can tell it’s extremely cold and frozen and there is also clearly some kind of city or infrastructure below. We had heard from some of the rumors and leaks that there would be a snow planet of some kind in this movie, but without more context we can’t say much about it.

Who Is Kylo Fighting?

There is a few things to note from this sequence of shots. Kylo Ren is taking down someone, but it does not appear to be a Rebel soldier and we know for a fact he is still on team Stormtrooper if you look at the first of the two shots. So who is that he is killing? When we did the reactionary Los Fanboys Podcast this week, we kinda thought it looked like a possible Knight of Ren. However, looking at it now, that doesn’t feel right to me either? Interesting.

Talking about Kylo Ren more, here we can see his helmet being repaired by someone with fairly hairy arms (no it’s not Chewie). Who or what might not really matter, but I kinda think it looks like an Ugnaught. Ugnaught’s were the creatures who Chewie had to get the broken pieces of Threepio from in The Empire Strikes Back. What do you think?

Tattooine?

We think the desert planet we see ifs Tattooine because the skiff the Rebels are flying on here is clearly the same design as the ones Jabba used in Return of the Jedi. Here, we see my big worry with this movie, that JJ Abrams is just going to remake Return of the Jedi after essentially remaking A New Hope with The Force Awakens. Especially when we consider who is coming back, but we will get to that.

This is interesting as it appears the gang are being chased own by Stormtroopers with jet packs and whilst this has appeared in cartoons. games, comics, we have never seen this yet in the movies.

The Princess

It’s going to be both interesting and a little sad to see how they manage to work their magic on Princess Leia after the tragic passing of Carrie Fisher far too young. We know they are using shots of her from The Force Awakens to make her a presence in The Rise of Skywalker.

For those unaware, this medal is either the one given to Han Solo or Luke Skywalker at the end of A New Hope. I’m going to guess this is Han’s medal and that’s Leia’s hands holding it. So it seems like Leia is gong to be thinking of Han in this movie, as one might expect?

The Death Star

This was the money shot of the trailer for me. Clearly this is the second Death Star from Return of the Jedi and therefore we must be back on the forest moon of Endor. Endor is a gas giant in the lore, so we must assume this is the forest moon itself. I really hope they don’t give us any Ewoks, but then this is Abrams so who knows?

Of course the big reveal of the trailer wasn’t visual, it was audio. Just after this shot, we hear a familiar laugh coming through and right away I thought perhaps it was Snoke, but I immediately thought it sounded more like The Emperor. And I’m sure you know by now, that after the trailer had been shown at Star Wars Celebration Ian McDiarmid appeared on stage and said “Roll it again!” in his Emperor voice.

I’m really not sure how I feel about this, it raises so many questions and I’m not sure I am going to like the answers. I know I am not alone in worrying that bringing back Sheev Palpatine undermines the redemption and sacrifice of Anakin Skywalker in Return of the Jedi. I am also not convinced that the plan was always to bring back Palpatine as Kathleen Kennedy has suggested. One wonders if Snoke had not been killed in The Last Jedi, would they have brought back The Emperor? My other worry is that this is being done so that Kylo Ren can have a redemption arc. This bothers me because if the sequel trilogy is all about the redemption of Ben Solo, then it’s again going to feel like a remake of Return of the Jedi.

What do you think of what you have seen so far, can you spot anything important that we might have missed? No on is ever truly gone, so get your ass down into that comment section and lets hear your theories, hopes and fears.
