Steven Spielberg Supports Changing Oscars Rules For Streaming Services

I love going to the movies! I am a huge fan of the theater experience. Yes I know about the expenses and annoying people that may join you on a cinematic adventure, but overall I will always want to see movies on a giant screen in the dark. That doesn’t mean I don’t like movies on my small screen. It would be bigger but my wife says 65 inches is big enough… pffff what does she know? Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon all have original movies with their services. Many of those movies now have top tier celebrities, get premiers, and win awards. Roma, from Netflix, took home three Academy Awards last week and it looks like Steven Spielberg wasn’t very happy with that. He doesn’t think that streaming services should be up for Oscars at all. He apparently supports changing the rules for Oscar nominees and. As the representative for directors on the board he’ll have a voice at this years post-show meeting. A represenative from Amblin, Spielberg’s production company, had this to say:

“Steven feels strongly about the difference between the streaming and theatrical situation. He’ll be happy if the others will join [his campaign] when that comes up [at the Academy Board of Governors meeting]. He will see what happens.”

Combine this with past comments from the man who gave us JawsJurassic Park, and Saving Private Ryan:

“Once you commit to a television format, you’re a TV movie. You certainly, if it’s a good show, deserve an Emmy, but not an Oscar. I don’t believe films that are just given token qualifications in a couple of theaters for less than a week should qualify for the Academy Award nomination.”

It’s pretty clear that Spielberg is a big fan of the status quo, but the world is changing. Technology is making everything different, and if Hollywood wants to remain relevant, they will need to make changes too. I see his point, but I disagree with it. I can see a time, in the not so distant future, that we will see brand new theatrical releases offered to be streamed at home on day one. Just look how quickly movies hit home video these days. I remember when it took nearly a year from theatrical release to home video release and now we get our digital releases three months after the day a movie hits the big screen.

What do you think about about Spielberg’s desire to change the rules? Do you think streaming services deserve Oscars? Let us know in the comments below!
