Taika Waititi Co-Writing And Directing Time Bandits Series Pilot At Apple

Apple isn’t really a name in streaming content just yet. Sure, they have one of the biggest digital marketplaces around, but they’re still late to the game when it comes to services like the ones Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video provide. However, over the past year or so, they’ve been locking down some enviable grade-A talent to help launch their eventual service, with filmmakers like M. Night Shyamalan and Damien Chazelle hard at work at some cool stuff.

You can now add another big name to the list of collaborators. Deadline is reporting that Thor: Ragnarok helmer Taika Waititi has signed on to help adapt Time Bandits. That’s right, the Terry Gilliam-directed film from 1981 is getting turned into a series for the digital giant’s impending service. The man will be co-writing and directing the pilot episode and serve as executive producer alongside Gilliam himself.

The outlet describes the original film as “a dark, irreverent adventure about imagination, bravery and the nature of our dreams. It follows the time-traveling adventures of an 11-year-old history buff named Kevin who, one night, stumbles on six dwarfs who emerge from his closet. They are former workers of the Supreme Being who have stolen a map that charts all the holes in the space-time fabric, using it to hop from one historical era to the next in order to steal riches. Throughout the movie, they meet various historical and fictional characters, including Napoleon Bonaparte and Robin Hood, while the Supreme Being simultaneously tries to catch up to them and retrieve the map.”

Sounds pretty cool, but my mind can’t help but turn to recent rumors surrounding an awful lot of interference from the Apple brass to help shape content. Based on that report, it sounds like Apple is creating content with a heavy hand, which is reportedly limiting creative freedom and supposedly causing big delays with their content.

But, of course, that’s just one report, and the reality is they are still bringing in some heavy hitters. So we’ll see if things are indeed the mess they are reported to be.
