Taika Waititi To Direct Secret Project Before Thor: Love And Thunder

Thor: Ragnorak director Taika Waititi is attached to direct an untitled project. That’s right. That means Waititi will handle directing duties on this project before he shoots Thor: Love and Thunder. The currently-untitled project is said to be based on the 2015 documentary Next Goal Wins. The documentary film was based on the true story of a Dutch soccer coach and his goal to turn a losing team of Samoan soccer players into a team of winners.

Next Goal Wins was bestowed with the British Independent Film Award for Best British Documentary in 2014. In addition, Next Goal Wins was awarded the London Critics Circle Film Awards, Documentary of The Year in 2015. Along with a Special Jury Award from the Abu Dhabi Film Festival.

Taika Waititi is making some interesting movies and showing he is bound by no genre or budget. Going from a small indie film like the 2014 What We Do In The Shadows about a multi-generational vampire clan to a big-budget blockbuster film like Marvel’s  Thor: Ragnorak without missing a beat is mighty impressive.

Akira fans will likely be waiting until after Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit, Next Goal Wins and Thor: Love and Thunder land in theaters before the classic manga receives an adaptation. But when it does, I hope that Waititi has sharpened his world-building skills. He will need to bring his A-game there in order to fully flesh out a seething, breathing, politically charged, neon tinted Neo-Tokyo to the big screen. Waititi did do a good job with planet Sakaar and Asgard, even though neither felt as much as fully functioning places as I would’ve like to have seen.
