That Spider-Man: Far From Home Ending Originally Scared The Writers

Disclaimer: This post contains massive spoilers for Spider-Man: Far From Home.

While the majority of Spider-Man: Far From Home was relatively safe in terms of what happened with its storytelling — many of us predicted how most of the story would play out in terms of the villain, the Elementals, and such — it saved a lot of its biggest surprises for the end-credits scenes, which kinda put everything on its head. Forget everything you knew about Spider-Man in terms of him having to have a secret identity, because Marvel Studios and Sony have effectively thrown that idea out the window.

In the post-credits sequence, J. Jonah Jameson of DailyBugle.net went on to share an exclusive video that took place moments before Mysterio’s death. In the scene, we see Mysterio dying at the hands of a seemingly-diabolical Spider-Man…and then he goes on to reveal Peter’s identity to the entire world.

And just like that, we have a world where Spider-Man is no longer a secret. It’s an idea that originally scared writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, as they revealed to The New York Times.

McKENNA We were challenged by the producers to come up with something that Peter sacrifices by the end of this movie, and when we hit upon that as a group, it became a very scary idea: “Oh, no, we can’t do that! Then it’s not a Spider-Man movie anymore!”

SOMMERS Ultimately, we realized that because it scared us, you have to run toward it.

McKENNA It’s such a bold maneuver that it became inevitable, particularly with a tricky character like Mysterio, who’s this dark father figure. From the grave, is he trying to give Peter his “I’m Iron Man” moment? It’s thrust upon him, but is this a lesson or a punishment?

We’ll have to wait and see, but it’s safe to say this is pretty much unforeseen territory. Sure, in the comics, there was one point where Peter revealed his identity — but that was a choice he made, and it was one that was effectively undone later on. Things are a bit different here, and I know I’m not alone in wondering where the story will go next.
