The Conjuring Producer Gives Update On Spin-Off Film The Crooked Man

Slowly, but surely, The Conjuring Universe is growing to a size that no one could have predicted. Of course, having a horror film with countless sequels isn’t exactly a new phenomenon. What is new here is the shared universe aspect they’ve managed form over the past several years.

Thus far, the franchises that make up this world are The Conjuring, Annabelle, and The Nun. But don’t think that they’re content to just sit back and rest on their pile of money. Another franchise-starter coming from them is The Crooked Man, which is based on the character that was introduced in The Conjuring 2.

Speaking with CinemaBlend, producer Peter Safran gave an update, saying:

“We’re still working on the script for it. The bar is set very high for the movies that we want to make in in The Conjuring Universe, and until we get to that place we’re not interested in putting one of these out there into the universe. I still think _The Crooked Man _could be a very interesting and different story.”

Given the sheer number of films we’re starting to get in this universe, it’s hard not to wonder what the criteria are for them to spin off a character into his or her own franchise. What was it about the character that warranted it getting made? Safran embellished on that process:

“One of the reasons we were excited to make The Nun is it looks and feels very different than the other films in the Conjuring Universe, in the sense that we take it out of the ordinary, Northeast United States, the look and feel of a regular home, and we transplanted to Romania in the 1950s, an abbey, all of that. We’re always looking to make sure that we don’t repeat ourselves. The Crooked Man has a very different look and feel, or will have a very different look and feel, than the other films in the universe.”

Do you think they’ve done a good job of not repeating themselves so far? Let us know in the comments down below!
