The Flash: Is Nora The Enemy?

We are on to our fourth episode of The Flash, and while it has been better than Season 4, it has still left a lot of room to be desired (Sherlock Wells?…Yikes).  What are we in store for this week?  Will we find out who was behind the coma that Cicada’s daughter is in?  Read on to find out!

The Enlightenment — Odd start to the show.  There was a blogger on the night of the enlightenment who wanted her picture with Nora.  Next, Iris tried to make a family breakfast, which was awful, and there the family issues continued.  Nora still projects a sense of resentment towards Iris.

New Meta…Kind Of– CCPD is holding a charity softball game, which highlights how bad Barry is.  The fastest man alive doesn’t seem to be a good athlete.  After being a major bi**h to Iris, Nora looks to be controlled by a rival blogger (Spencer Young) who was also the blogger wanting a picture with Nora at the beginning of the episode (really?).  Anyways, Nora saves the day from Jones bringing a bomb to the game without realizing she did anything. This is a weird episode so far.  The focus is on the still tense relationship between Iris and Nora, but the rest isn’t extremely interesting.  Spencer wants to get famous through Nora.  She is setting up crimes in order for Nora to respond so she can gain more followers.  Alright, most villains want to take over the world, but she wants more…followers?  Ugh.

Spencer isn’t exactly a meta, but her phone kind of is?  She can send headlines that hypnotize people, which has been happening to Barry and Nora.  I’m sorry,  but this feels like a Joel Schumacher-style Batman.  The plot is ridiculous.

Confrontation — Iris has a heated meeting with Spencer, who wants to make Iris’ blog non-existent.  Wow.  So exciting…

Spencer sees Barry and Nora and uses her phone to control Barry’s mind this time.  They are really using every stereotype of a millennial in order to characterize Spencer.  A bit overboard, but the odd beginning was foreshadowing for how she got her powers. Things were taken to a new level when Nora tried to see if Spencer was a meta when Spencer ended up flirting with Nora, and Nora enjoyed the attention.  Eventually, Barry and Nora go against each other because of the hypnotic headlines Spencer sends out. Who shows up to save the day?  Iris of course.  Why wouldn’t she? Iris is a deadshot with a dart gun as well when she shoots Nora and knocks her out.  Barry quickly cuffs Spencer and takes her phone.  A quick resolution, yet again.

We do find out why Nora has such resentment towards Iris.  Nora didn’t even know she had powers until six months prior because Iris from the future planted a power dampener in her in order to protect her.  Could future Iris have done this because Barry was lost and she didn’t want anything to happen to her daughter?  This angle is interesting, and I wish more of the focus would be on this. Iris had kept a huge part of Nora’s life from her, and she realizes how bad that was, but she can’t figure out the reasoning, which leads to more issues between the two.

Cicada’s Backstory — Sherlock Wells and Team Flash put together everything they know about Cicada, which isn’t much.  Ralph feels that his mask is the key. Ralph and Wells go back to the scene where the fight with Cicada took place in order to find some clues.  Their search leads to a dead-end when they find the same mask that Cicada uses, but it is a company mandated mask, which means there are thousands of them.

Wells does figure out that when injured and wearing the mask, they sound like Cicada.  Because of this, Wells also deduces that Cicada’s lungs were injured from the debris of the satellite that Barry and Nora destroyed.  Could this be what injured his daughter as well?  More than likely.  Also, just as Spencer had her “meta-phone” the dark matter DeVoe released last season has now created meta-technology, which is what Cicada’s dagger is made of.  Now not only can people be metas, but objects as well.  This would at least explain Cicada’s motives for going after Flash and all other metas.

Honestly, I did not like the episode.  I don’t feel like it had many redeeming qualities.  Am I being too critical? What did you think of this week’s episode?  Are you still giving Season 5 a chance, or are you starting to lose your faith in the show?  Leave your thoughts in the usual spot, and thanks for reading!

The Flash returns next Tuesday at 8 p.m. on The CW.
