It’s often joked that no one in comic books are ever truly dead. Sure, there’s the occasional character who dies and (gasp) manages to stay dead, but that’s rarely ever the case — especially when you have characters as iconic as DC’s. This is a storytelling trope that has, for better or worse, carried over to their TV shows. Perhaps one of the most egregious offenders in recent memory is the CW show, The Flash.

Now, let me be clear. This is by no means a slight against the show. It’s one of favorite parts of the week watching The Flash every week, so despite its flaws, I find it to be an enjoyable piece of escapism. Plus, it’s a story riddled with time travel and cross-dimensional travel. As such, we’ve seen good guys be bad guys, bad guys be good guys, bad guys die and come back, good guys die and come back, and everything in between. It comes with the territory of a show like this. It’s a series that’s managed to make recurring/regular characters out of those who have long since died.

However, one character that met his maker at the tail end of Season 1 has, quite refreshingly, stayed dead. That’s right. I’m talking about Eddie Thawne: Iris’ fiancé and great great great (however many greats there are) grandfather to Eobard Thawne, a.k.a. Reverse-Flash. At the conclusion of Season 1, realizing that one of his descendants would grow up to be one of the worst humans imaginable, he takes his own life. He was a character I enjoyed and respected, and I was always saddened by his death — but that was the beauty of it to me. It was a death that had impact.

Now, in a recent interview in ComicBook.com’s “Flashback,” actor Rick Cosnett, who plays Eddie in the show was asked if we could expect to see his character return in The Flash. His answer was surprising.

“Definitely…definitely. I can’t say exactly where, but there is definitely a big chance that I could be in this new timeline, you’ll have to wait and see.”

The main crux of this current season of The Flash revolves around the aftereffects of Flashpoint. Barry went back in time and saved his mom, but after missing his old life, did his best to re-instate his old world. His attempt was mostly successful, but in the process, little things changed. It’s too early to tell which parts have changed just yet, but each episode, we’re finding more and more inconsistencies that are a result of Barry’s meddling. It wouldn’t be out of place if Eddie was one of them.

Who knows, Barry may have some real competition for Iris’ affection in the near future.

The Flash airs Tuesdays at 8/7c on The CW.
