Writer-director James Gunn is currently living the dream. The dude managed to make Guardians of the Galaxy into a household name against all odds, and after getting fired from the third film in the franchise, he managed to both lock down a role as director of The Suicide Squad and return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Clearly, things are looking good for him.

While we still have a good while until Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 goes in front of cameras, The Suicide Squad has already started its production, and in commemoration of the event, Gunn was given a gift, which he shared on Instagram.

That’s right. He was gifted an issue of The Brave and the Bold, which featured the first appearance of the titular Suicide Squad, which of course, would undergo many different transformations as the decades went on, though Rick Flag did show up in that first appearance.

I’ve personally never read the 1959 issue, but am very intrigued by that cover and its overall differences from the eventual Suicide Squad we’ve come to know.
