The God of High School Voice Cast Share Their Fighting Styles and Big Wishes [Exclusive Interview]

If you are fans of the Crunchyroll Original The God of High School, then you will want to check out this exclusive interview with the voice cast. Brendan Hughes and I had the pleasure of interviewing Tatsumaru Tachibana, voice of Jin Mori; Kentaro Kumagai, voice of Han Daewi; and Ayaka Ohashi, voice of Yoo Mira. A big thanks to Crunchyroll for translating our questions to Japanese and the cast’s responses from Japanese to English for us.

Also, note that this interview took place after only viewing the first episode of the series, so no major spoilers ahead on this one. So without further ado, here is the interview, starting with cast lead Tatsumaru Tachibana.

Tatsumaru Tachibana

Steve: Thank you for offering your time for this interview. I understand that you were previously active in theatre and stage before voice acting. How do you feel the two compare? What has the process been like transitioning into the world of voice acting, especially now that you’ve landed a leading role?

Tachibana: I have wanted to be a voice actor since I was a kid. I started doing voice acting when I joined my current agency. I also have a very loud voice, so I moved away from the microphone a little bit during the fight scenes and moved closer to it depending on the scene.

Steve: That’s awesome, you’re doing a great job as Jin Mori. How familiar are you with The God of High School Webtoon comic? Have you read the source material in preparing to play Jin Mori?

Tachibana: The webcomic was included in the audition brief, and that’s when I first read it.

Brendan: If you were able to participate in The God of High School tournament and came out the victor, what would your big wish be?

Tachibana: I want to erase the malice from the world.

Steve: Very noble, that’s a good one. So, Jin Mori is unique in that he fights using kicks more than punches. What style of martial arts would you choose if you could master any style?

Tachibana: I would choose Aikido to parry and escape from the enemy. I’d avoid painful things at all costs.

Kentaro Kumagai

Brendan: You have a lot of experience in voice acting. How do you feel Han Daewi’s character compares to past roles you have played?

Kumagai: Daewi is a somewhat awkward and endearing character who seems mature but also has a younger side.

Steve: Han Daewi is definitely a bit of a quiet character, yet knows when to step up (like when he helped stop the robber in episode 1). Can we expect to see Han Daewi step up even more as the story progresses?

Kumagai: Yes, you can see it. One of the great things about Daewi is to act for someone else.

Brendan: Same question for you: If you were able to participate in The God of High School tournament and came out the victor, what would your big wish be?

Kumagai: It’s a lifetime of health (laugh).

Brendan: I imagine we will see lots of martial arts styles (real and fictional) displayed in this series. If you had to choose, what would you be your go-to martial arts style to master?

Kumagai: I love professional wrestling and want to master it. Also, my roots are in Okinawa, so I want to learn karate.

Brendan: How would you describe Han Daewi’s character in three words?

Kumagai: I think it’s self-sacrifice, kindness and patience.

Ayaka Ohashi

Yoo Mira_GOH

Steve: Your experience in voice acting is very impressive. How does Yoo Mira compare to other characters you have played in the past?

Ohashi: Mira is a very strong girl who fights with Moonlight Sword Style. She trains hard every day to become stronger. Mria has a wide range of facial expressions and shows various emotions! She has a younger sister** so she’s caring. She’s pretty, stylish, and amazing!! (laugh) She is good at kenjutsu (sword techniques), so the action scenes were difficult for me as I felt like an amateur. Mira is strong herself, so it was hard for me to act and play the dialogue in one take.

**Note from Crunchyroll: It was a cousin, but her role is very similar to a little sister.

Steve: And since we asked the other two, we are curious to hear from you:  If you were able to participate in The God of High School tournament and came out the victor, what would your big wish be?

Ohashi: I want to lose my weight!!!!!! And grow to 168cm tall (about 5’6″) with long arms and legs and make my face smaller!!!!

Brendan: If you had to choose, what would you be your go-to martial arts style to master?

Ohashi: I love the way Mira fights!! She can use a sword, and she’s strong with her bare hands! She is almighty and cool! ♡

Steve: And finally, how would you describe Yoo Mira’s character in three words?

Ohashi: She never gives-up, has a very strong will, and is compassionate!!

Thank you all for reading up, and definitely check out The God of High School if you have not yet. It is definitely the best anime of the summer, and is paving the way to be a top fighter anime.
