The Grinch: Trailer 3 Hits For Illumination’s New Take On The Classic Tale

Yes, you read that right. We’re already readying ourselves for Christmas movie for the year. 2018’s only just started and we’re nearing its end. In this case, we’re getting yet another take on the classic Dr. Seuss book How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

The story was famously adapted decades ago for television, and more recently as a live-action film starring Jim Carrey. This time around, Illumination Entertainment has the reins, and are adapting for CG animation, a fitting medium for Dr. Seuss stories.

Personally, I wasn’t sold on the movie based on those first two trailers. Rather than actually delve into the story, it seemed little more than a series of goofy vignettes. If you were hoping for more than that for this third trailer, like I was, then you’ll likely be sorely disappointed. It’s charming enough in its own way, with the Grinch acting like less of a grinch than he did in previous entries, but it doesn’t really capture what made that original story so captivating. But, at the end of the day, it is a kids movie, and kids movies tend to throw the jokes at the forefront, so it could very well be that that’s how they’ve opted to sell this one.

Below is the official synopsis for The Grinch:

“Each year at Christmas they disrupt his tranquil solitude with their increasingly bigger, brighter and louder celebrations. When the Whos declare they are going to make Christmas three times bigger this year, the Grinch realizes there is only one way for him to gain some peace and quiet: he must steal Christmas. To do so, he decides he will pose as Santa Claus on Christmas Eve, even going so far as to trap a lackadaisical misfit reindeer to pull his sleigh.”

“Meanwhile, down in Who-ville, Cindy-Lou Who—a young girl overflowing with holiday cheer—plots with her gang of friends to trap Santa Claus as he makes his Christmas Eve rounds so that she can thank him for help for her overworked single mother. As Christmas approaches, however, her good-natured scheme threatens to collide with the Grinch’s more nefarious one. Will Cindy-Lou achieve her goal of finally meeting Santa Claus? Will the Grinch succeed in silencing the Whos’ holiday cheer once and for all?”
