The Harry Potter Franchise Is Worth An Astounding $25 Billion

This year will see the release of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, and with that, it will mark the 10th film in the Wizarding World franchise and the second film in the Fantastic Beasts series. But through all this, one cannot forget from where the film spawned. 20 years ago, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone hit U.S. bookshelves, and since then has gone on to be one of the most beloved franchises known to man.

But just how much can this franchise actually be worth? After all, we do live in a world of franchise, with Marvel and DC ruling at the box-office on a near-weekly basis. So how does the Boy Who Lived stack up to the big boys? According to a new report from Yahoo!, the franchise, which spans books, films, theme parks, merchandise, and everything in between, has reached a value of $25 billion.

I’ll repeat that. $25 billion.

Let’s go ahead and provide a couple comparison. Back in 2012, Disney acquired Lucasfilm for $4.06 billion and a couple years before that, they also acquired Marvel Entertainment for $4 billion. Also for reference, most of 21st Century Fox’s assets were acquired (again, by Disney) for $71.3 billion.

So, the Harry Potter franchise is worth more than six times what both Lucasfilm and Marvel Entertainment were worth when they were acquired (though both are likely valued much higher nowadays), and is worth a little more than one-third of what 21st Century Fox — an entire entertainment conglomerate — was worth.

That ain’t nothing to sneeze at.
