Hopefully, you weren’t too excited to play the PS4 sequel The Last of Us, because you’ll now have to wait a few more months in order to enter back into that world. The new report initially came as a rumor from Kotaku, who had sources tell them that The Last of Us Part II was getting delayed from February 21, 2020 to a generic Spring 2020 release date.

Well, that rumor was quickly made official when game dev Naughty Dog confirmed on their official blog that the game will hit on May 29, 2020. The announcement came from The Last of Us Part II director Neil Druckman, who lamented this move, considering it was only around a month ago when its February release date was announced.

Here’s what Druckman had to say about the matter.

“However, it was during the last few weeks, as we were closing out sections of the game, that we realized we simply didn’t have enough time to bring the entire game up to a level of polish we would call Naughty Dog quality. At this point we were faced with two options: compromise parts of the game or get more time. We went with the latter, and this new release date allows us to finish everything to our level of satisfaction while also reducing stress on the team.

“While we’re relieved that we won’t have to compromise our vision, we’re disappointed that we weren’t able to avoid this exact situation. We wish we could’ve foreseen the amount of polish we needed, but the size and scope of this game got the better of us. We hate disappointing our fans and for that we’re sorry.”

While this is unfortunate, the reality is that it’s only a few months, and the legacy of that game will live on in perpetuity, so it’s important they take the time to get it right. Constant delays have served Nintendo well for decades, so why shouldn’t it do the same for Naughty Dog?
