The Lion King: Donald Glover On What Simba Taught Him

Although Disney’s The Lion King is getting mixed reviews, I personally enjoyed Director Jon Favreau’s take on the beloved animated film. In fact, I don’t think I’ve had that much fun in a cinema since La LA Land. I think one of the major reasons was how the film explored the Circle of Life as a theme. In today’s zeitgeist this message struck a chord and hit home with me.

Well, Simba himself aka Donald Glover thinks so as well. Recently LRM had a chance to attend a Press Conference for The Lion King and when he Glover was asked about how Simba was different he began to talk about what Simba taught him:

“I guess Jon was really good about the circle of life having a major hand in it. I really feel that it’s good to make movies that are global and metropolitan in the sense of the citizens of the world. Like making sure that we talk about like how connected we are right now. Because it’s the first time we’ve really been able to talk to everybody at the same time. So I felt yeah. It was just like a necessary thing. I felt like he was really good about talking about that very, very upfront in the beginning of it. And he’s like, this is what… because he kind of did it in the Jungle Book, too. Where like the Jungle Book story is the same. But the idea of like yeah, humans, their tricks are their power, and they can help everybody. Switching that and making the story the same, I think the same thing happens in this in such a great way.”

Simba experiencing how his actions affect the pride lands is just the lesson he needs to learn to be king. The film explores this through not only Simba, but through Scar and even Timon and Pumbaa too.

I’m excited to see The Lion King again for that very reason. I think this is a very important idea that we should all be thinking about in today’s age of social media. How do we affect the people around us? Between the theme, classic songs, and brilliant performances by Glover and the rest of the cast, I highly recommend you take the kiddies and run out to see Disney’s The Lion King this weekend in theaters.
