The Mandalorian Success Is Lower Expectations and Simplicity?

The Mandalorian succeeded from lower expectations of TV and keeping things very simple. At least that’s what Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni believe contributed to The Mandalorian becoming a cultural phenomenon.  In a recent EW article both added their thoughts on how they viewed their approach to making the show.  Favreau said, “Having worked on bigger, higher-profile films, there’s a much different set of standards that you’re judged by. We’ve benefited from the smallness of our world.” His thoughts boil down to people have lower exceptions when approaching a TV show versus what they get out of a movie.

Are there other key factors at play?

Favreau also points to what Filoni brings to the table.  George Lucas mentored Filoni during Star Wars: The Clone Wars Filoni took cues for The Mandalorian from the straightforward nature of A New HopeThis led Filoni to say, “Quite simply: We didn’t overthink things.” Star Wars, in Filoni’s opinion, is character first followed closely by their goals. Both of these seem ever present in The Mandalorian.

Will this always work?

My biggest issue with The Mandalorian was how small the Star Wars galaxy felt. This is a vast lived in galaxy but some episodes only had a handful of people, almost making the galaxy feel empty. Maybe this was due to them trying to keep things simple. Moving forward people will want more. Filoni understands universe building for Star Wars so hopefully the simple will turn more complex as we move forward. In regards to Favreau’s comments, he sees benefits from working in the smallness of this world. Hopefully, he will continue to figure out ways to make everything work in a positive direction for Star Wars.

What do you think about their comments regarding the success of The Mandalorian?
