The Mandalorian To Feature Bounty Hunter IG-88

For better or worse, it looks like Disney is trudging forth with series and films that constantly feel the need to pay homages to the canon that came before — as slight as certain connections may be. At the end of the day, they are working with a shared universe of sorts, and audiences are generally very happy to revisit some old characters and learn a bit more about them.

We recently learned that the new Disney+ original series, The Mandalorian, would feature some of the bounty hunters featured in the Empire Strikes Back for roughly five seconds (though, of course, they were expounded upon in the now-defunct Expanded Universe). But as far as which of these bounty hunters would be involved…that remained a mystery. The Mandalorian executive producer Jon Favreau took to Instagram on Christmas day to show off one specific bounty hunter: IG-88.

As is obvious from the image, this character isn’t an organic lifeform, but rather a droid bounty hunter. I’ll admit ignorance on any real meaningful information about who this guy is, but I’m sure our own resident Star Wars expert Kyle Malone will have more to say on this tomorrow in this week’s The Cantina column.

The Mandalorian is set a few years after Return of the Jedi in the farthest reaches of the galaxy, far from the influence of any civilized government. It will feature Pedro Pascal as the titular bounty hunter, along with a cast that includes Gina Carano, Giancarlo Esposito, Emily Swallow, Carl Weathers, Werner Herzog, and Nick Nolte.

The 10-episode series is written by Favreau and will be executive produced by him. What do you think of this IG-88 reveal? Have you been waiting for a day to pull out your posters of him from your storage bins? Let us know your thoughts down below!
