The Matrix Gets 20th Anniversary Select Theater Release

The Matrix; it might have had two very dodgy sequels in my humble opinion, in fact I’d go as far as saying they were downright bad at times, but that first movie for me remains a classic. I remember looking for a movie to watch with my (then girlfriend, now wife) back in 1999. I had heard almost nothing of The Matrix and neither had any of my friends. So in we went to see the movie and by the time I left I was blown away. The Matrix as a standalone movie is one of my very favourites of all time. Such a well-structured and innovative movie that blended its dark sci-fi undertones with hair raising kick-ass action we had never seen before and a pumping techno soundtrack. By the time I bought it on DVD and set up a decent sound system, I had all my friends watching it and leaving my house raving about it, the movie was that good.

It’s been 20 years since The Matrix first exploded on the scene and Dolby Laboratories, Warner Bros, and AMC Theaters today announced that the classic will be returning to select theaters nationwide for an exclusive one-week run at Dolby Cinema at AMC/ The film will hit select theaters on August 30th,, and you can catch the announcement trailer above along with the cool poster for the re-release below.

“Bringing The Matrix to life in Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos pays homage to the masterpiece that the Wachowskis created 20 years ago,” said Doug Darrow, Senior Vice President, Cinema Business Group, Dolby Laboratories in a press release. “Movie lovers will be able to see and experience unforgettable sequences like bullets flying in slow motion with the utmost detail – transforming one of the most iconic sci-fi films of this generation.”

“Warner Bros. is proud to re-release the groundbreaking motion picture The Matrix, for the first time in Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos,” said Jeff Goldstein, President, Domestic Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures. “Dolby Cinema offers moviegoers an unparalleled sense of realism in how they experience this game-changing film, making it a must-see event, whether for the first time or a return to The Matrix.”

I would actually pay money to go see this again in theaters all jazzed up with modern tech, alas, it seems like this release is reserved for Stateside only and won’t be coming to European shores at all. It does remind me that I really should try and pick up that movie on Blu-ray, though I don’t want the trilogy, I prefer to pretend those movies didn’t happen, and I do have the DVD’s of those sequels anyway. However I would like to get a better version of the original because it still stands up as a great movie to this day for me.
