The Meg Sequel In Early Stages, Theme Park Attraction Talks Underway

The Meg was quite the surprise for someone like me. Sure, when you think of Jason Statham going head to head with a megalodon, it checks all the right boxes for a lot of people, but it also conjures up images of films like Snakes on a Plane — a concept that seems cool on paper and terrible in practice. I hoped it would be fun, but didn’t think many people would be heading to the theater to check it out.

Boy, was I wrong. The film got mixed reviews, but made an absolute killing, especially overseas. When all said and done, it made nearly $528 million worldwide, with 73% of its revenue coming from foreign markets, which makes plenty of sense, given the content. With its budget sitting at $130 million, it landed well within the profitable range, and with its source material having several sequels, a film sequel seemed inevitable.

According to executive producer Catherine Xujun Ying, who is CEO of production company Gravity Pictures, they are currently in early stages of the sequel. Sadly, there are no details, as they are looking to keep it a secret, but it seems that another film is imminent. But that ain’t all! In addition to the sequel, they are also in talks to develop theme park attractions in China.

“Hopefully China will have the first Jurassic aquarium,” Ying told Variety.

“We were being laughed at by a lot of people for making this movie,” said director Jon Turteltaub. “Before it came out, the tracking was horrible. They were saying this is a huge mistake, Warner Brothers has blown it, China is done.”
