The Oscars Will Not Introduce A Popular Film Category…For Now…

It looks like the folks over at the Academy Awards have been listening to all the negative buzz surrounding the potential “Popular Film” category that was floated a few weeks back because they’re now backpedaling on that possibility. At least for now.

According to a new report from Variety, the Academy will not be introducing the much-discussed category at the 91st Academy Awards ceremony, which will take place next year.

“There has been a wide range of reactions to the introduction of a new award, and we recognize the need for further discussion with our members,” said Academy CEO Dawn Hudson. “We have made changes to the Oscars over the years—including this year—and we will continue to evolve while also respecting the incredible legacy of the last 90 years.”

This is a good move from the Oscars. As we have discussed on this site in various pieces, this move would be nothing more than a disingenuous cash grab. Were that category to be present, it would relegate blockbusters to that category alone, allowing the Academy to further indulge in the typical, boring, Oscar-bait bulls**t they’ve been rolling in for decades.

While this move doesn’t guarantee they’ll be taking blockbusters any more seriously, it does allow them the opportunity to make a more serious move in incorporating them into the show, by changing the culture to actually allow these films to be taken seriously. But that’s easier said than done.
