The Prodigy Trailer: Another Creepy Kid Tale Seemingly Done Right

What is any Halloween without at least one trailer for an upcoming horror film with a terrifying kid at its center? Of course, films like The Omen and The Exorcist really popularized the trope, and while it’s been decades since those hit, it hasn’t become any less effective over the years. Put a little kid with a dead-eyed stare in a dark room and you’ll likely have butts in seats.

This seems to be the approach taken for the upcoming Orion Pictures movie The Prodigy. Luckily for us, they don’t seem to be resting on the laurels of terrifying children, as it looks to be a well thought out little horror flick — or at least one with an interesting premise. There’s something wrong with Miles, and in order to dig into the reason why, his mother has taken her to this hypnotist.

The metronome swings back and forth, and as the hypnotist talks, we learn that there is someone who has taken up residence in Miles’ body. In the final jump scare of the trailer, Miles runs towards his mother, only to morph into a terrifying full-grown man. Is this kids the Chucky doll of human beings? Does he have the spirit of a serial killer living inside him? We’ll have to wait and see.

Below is the official synopsis to The Prodigy:

“In her much anticipated foray into the horror-thriller genre, Emmy and Golden Globe nominee Taylor Schilling (Orange Is The New Black) stars as Sarah, a mother whose young son Miles, Jackson Robert Scott (It, AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead), exhibits disturbing behavior that signals an evil, possibly supernatural force has overtaken him.”

The Prodigy hits theaters on February 8, 2019.
