After Avengers: Endgame it seems that for now, the directing duo of the Russo Bros. are done with the MCU. Who knows where they will go next in their careers, but fans will be hoping that someday in the future the MCU will be able to tempt Joe and Anthony Russo back for some more Marvel mayhem?

Speaking with Business Insider recently, Joe and Anthony Russo did talk about what Marvel properties out there excite them, and maybe leave a few hints as to what could bring them back further down the line. Anthony Russo said,

“We love Marvel, we have the most amazing working relationship with them, and we’re very close with them. Maybe there will be an idea that comes up in the future, but there is none now.”

However, Joe Russo added,

“It’s just about finding the right story that inspires us. That’s why we get out of bed every day. I love Ben Grimm from the Fantastic Four. Doctor Doom was always one of my favourite villains.” And then whilst saying he was also a fan of Wolverine he also conceded that Wolverine has “got to be set aside for a little while.”

Of course, we know that it is probably going to be in Phase 5 before the likes of Fantastic Four or X-Men are brought into the MCU. Wolverine, for example, is still so associated with the performance of Hugh Jackman, that they need to let that fall away from the public consciousness a little before they introduce the fan favorite back in. The Fantastic Four for me don’t need quite the same hiatus as the X-Men do, because of the dismal portrayals of Marvel’s first family thus far.

Previously the Russo’s have also expressed a desire to develop a Secret Wars movie, which would of course heavily involve the likes of the X-Men and the Fantastic Four if going by the comic books. In my mind, if Kevin Feige ever plans to do that event movie further down the line, he should already be penciling in the Russos’ names as directors. It could conceivably take another 10 years to get to that point, and by then hopefully, the Russo’s will be more than happy to step back into the MCU after quite the break.
