The Shawshank Redemption Returning To Theaters For 25th Anniversary

One of the greatest films of all-time is returning to theaters next week for it’s 25th anniversary. “The Shank,” officially known as The Shawshank Redemption will once again be available to view on the big screen. Based on Stephen King’s novella, Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption, the film currently comes in at #1 on IMDb‘s top 250 list, and has critics and audience scores on Rotten Tomatoes of 90 and 98 percent respectively.

Things weren’t always this way, as the film was more or less a flop when it was released back in 1994 even though it was nominated for seven Oscars. While being nominated in several categories, the film went home empty-handed, though competition was tough that year, as Shawshank was up against the like of Forrest Gump and Pulp Fiction.

Nowadays, it’s one of those movies that if you find a friend that has never seen it, you immediately put yourself on a mission to make them watch it. It’s just one of those must-see movies for anyone who calls themselves film buff.

I’m not quite sure where the film resides on my personal list, but it’s up there, an all-around well-made film with an unforgettable story, not to mention the performance of both Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman, it’s one film I truly feel deserves all the praise it receives.

An official synopsis for the film follows below.

“From a novella by best-selling author Stephen King comes a poignant tale of the human spirit. Red (Morgan Freeman), serving a life sentence, and Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins), a mild-mannered banker wrongly convicted of murder, forge an unlikely bond that will span more than twenty years. Together they discover hope as the ultimate means of survival.”
