The Shrek Franchise Is Getting Rebooted By Despicable Me Creator

Live long enough and we’ll see virtually every existing story out there rebooted in some form or another. This apparently even applies to animated films that came about as recently as 15 or so years ago (good lord, has it been that long already?), and more specifically to the tale of one Ogre and a cursed princess.

That’s right, according to a new report from Variety, Dreamworks is looking to reboot their beloved Shrek franchise — including Puss in Boots — in the very near future. In charge of this reboot will be Chris Meledandri, the man who helped create Despicable Me, a franchise that went on to be a billion-dollar-a-film seller for Illumination Entertainment.

I know…A Shrek reboot? Is nothing sacred? Well, apparently, yes, some things are. Don’t think of this as a standard reboot, where they go and re-tell the stories we already love with a new visual style, characters, and cast. What this is as an attempt for them to tell new stories with the existing character and cast that made the franchise so popular to begin with.

“When you look back on those vocal performances they’re awesome, and while you certainly could make a case for a complete reinvention, I find myself responding to my own nostalgic feelings of wanting to go back to those characterizations,” Meledandri told the outlet. “The challenge for us has been to find something that really does feel like it’s not simply yet another film in a series of sequels.”

So the word “reboot” is being used liberally as a “reboot” of the franchise that we already know and love, but different enough to where we shouldn’t expect the same ol’ thing as before.

“There’s a tremendous amount of fun to be had in that world, but it’s a high bar to find a story that’s truly world. You want to find something in the narrative that really feels like a departure.”

While Meledandri is working with Dreamworks Animation to bring this franchise back to life, it sounds like he’ll still very much be involved over at Illumination Entertainment, so don’t think this is a case where a founder is abandoning his old studio for another established one.
