The Witcher, as I am sure you are aware by now, is a series of books being adapted into a live-action show by streaming giant Netflix. Henry Cavill (Man of Steel) was announced earlier in the lead role of Geralt and there was some controversy surrounding the potential race change of another of the lead roles, you can find details of how this all blew up in the related section below. But going by yesterday’s casting announcements it seems that the racial controversy was completely unfounded.

Netflix and showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich have announced several members of the cast including two of the other lead roles. Anya Chalotra (The ABC Murders) is Yennefer the sorceress and love interest of Geralt and Freya Allan (War of the Worlds) is Ciri, Geralt’s adopted daughter and princess of Cintra. With regards to both these major roles, I really like the casting of Ciri here, but I am slightly concerned about the actress playing Yennefer. For me, the actress looks so young it’s hard right now to see her as the much older than she looks cocky and self-sure Yennefer, but we shall see.
The other cast members announced are Queen Calanthe (Jodhi May, Game of Thrones) and her husband, the knight Eist (Björn Hlynur Haraldsson, Fortitude), along with the druid Mousesack (Adam Levy, Snatch), Tissaia (MyAnna Buring, Ripper Street), Fringilla (Mimi Ndiweni, Black Earth Rising), Sabrina (Therica Wilson-Read, Profile) and Millie Brady (The Last Kingdom) as the outcast Princess Renfri. Here is what Hissrich told Deadline about the casting process for the show, which is expected to be rounded up very soon.
“Casting The Witcher has been one of the biggest projects of my career and undoubtedly the most exciting. I can’t wait for these wonderful actors to bring such iconic and loved characters to life on screen and to share these special stories with viewers all over the world.”
As yet we do not have a date when The Witcher is set to begin filming, but it is likely going to be 2020 before we see the show hit Netflix.
