Thor: Ragnarok – Director Taika Waititi Personally Shaved Karl Urban’s Head For The Role

It takes a good amount of dedication for one to shave their hair for a role in a film. After all, in today’s day and age, you can largely get away with mostly everything with a skilled makeup artist or hair designer. But to actually get rid of it all for the sake of a few months of shooting? That’s something else.

Though it isn’t exactly uncommon. Natalie Portman did so for V for Vendetta, Sigourney Weaver did it for Alien 3, Matt Damon did it for Elysium, and most recently, Karl Urban did it for the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok, where he plays the character Skurge.

LRM had a chance to sit down and speak with Urban, and in our interview, he discussed how he first came into the role before delving into going to the set for the first time. When he first showed up, director Taika Waititi was quick to stop production just to perform one important task:

“When Taika sent me the script, he also sent me some key art of what his vision of the characters was gong to be. And that was one of the first conversations we had. He’s like, ‘I’d like to shave your head,’ and I read the script and went, ‘Yes, I’ll do this.’ Actually, the first time I turned up in Australia, he stopped shooting the movie, and made a beeline for where I was at to come personally shave my head.”

Gotta love an actor who’ll shave his or her head, but you doubly gotta love an director who’ll shut down an entire production just to do it himself.

Thor: Ragnarok hits theaters on November 3, 2017.
