Todd Phillips’ Joker Wins Top Prize At Venice Film Festival

When Warner Bros. Pictures decided to go outside the box with Todd Phillips’ Joker film, there was a lot of criticism about how well it could do. But with an A-list name like Joaquin Phoenix starring as Arthur Fleck and a low budget of around $55 million it was a safe bet for the studios after some of their DC films did not do so well. The film recently has been started to be reviewed and it is getting an overwhelming amount of positive reviews. But it was also going to be showcased at this year’s 76th edition of the Venice Film Festival and the results are in!

Via TheWrap we have learned that the film that is based on DC’s iconic Batman villain, Joker, has won the Golden Lion award, which is the top prize at the Venice Film Festival. Phillips’ Joker film beat out films like James Gray’s Ad Astra and Steven Soderbergh’s The Laundromat for this honor. The film J’Accuse or in English, An Officer and a Spy, by director Roman Polanski won the Grand Jury Prize, which is considered the festival’s runner up prize. As he accepted the award Phillip’s said, “I want to thank Warner Bros. and DC for stepping out of their comfort zone and taking a big swing on me.”

Although Phoenix’s performance has been overall praised for his role, he was beat out by Luca Marinelli for the prize of Best Actor in Martin Eden. The Best Actress award went to Ariane Ascaride for her role in Gloria Mundi and Roy Andersson picked up the win for Best Director for About Endlessness.

The two trailers we have have seen for Joker, as well as a lot of the behind the scenes photos, videos and now an award and even Oscar buzz will no doubt help the film out when it releases next month. But the question stands, will this film live up to it’s hype with audiences? How will comic book fans react to seeing a film that is based on such an iconic characters in it’s own world? I can’t wait to see it myself!
