Tolkien: George R.R. Martin Thinks A Movie Based On His Life Would Be ‘A Very Dull Movie’

Biopics are a pretty well-worn genre in Hollywood. And it makes sense. History is full of amazing people, and we often turn to these movies for inspiration or as an easy, digestible way to get a feeling for a real person or a moment in time. One such biopic is Tolkien, which chronicles the life of Lord of the Rings author J.R.R. Tolkien. The man revolutionized fantasy fiction and decades later, his stories made a huge impact on Hollywood as well, cementing his place in pop culture.

LRM Online had a chance to attend the Westwood, California premiere, where A Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin was in attendance to moderate a Q&A after the film. Our own Gig Patta asked Martin how he’d feel if in 100 years or so they made a movie about him.

“I think it would be a very dull movie (laughs),” Martin told LRM Online. “It’ll have a lot of me sitting at a desk, writing things…when you see [Tolkien], the grueling, horrifying things that Tolkien went through in World War I are a big part of it. But writers, as a general rule are not the best subjects for biopics, because we spend a lot of time sitting alone at our desks, staring a blank sheet of people in the old days, or a blank computer screen these days.”

Gig also turned the subject to the influence Tolkien had on Martin as a writer, which was understandably extensive, which makes sense, considering some have called him today’s Tolkien (a title which I think is disingenuous, but that’s besides the point).

“He had an enormous influence,” Martin admitted. “I don’t know if I wouldn’t be a writer today without Tolkien, but I certainly wouldn’t be a fantasy writer. He changed fantasy forever and remade it in his own image not only me, but every modern fantasist is working in Tolkien’s shadow.”

Martin’s own novel series A Song of Ice and Fire still has two novels left in it, but the series adaptation on HBO is airing its final episode this coming Sunday. But, if you can’t get enough Westeros, there is also a prequel series coming next year, so we’ll be eagerly awaiting that one.
