No matter how you feel about Tom Cruise when it comes to Scientology, you can’t deny the dedication the actor has to his films. In the Mission: Impossible franchise, Cruise has made it a tradition to perform his own stunts, no matter how insane they may seem. From rock climbing in Mission: Impossible II to scaling the 2,700ft Burj Khalifa in Dubai for Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Cruise has been at the center of each stunt, adding a sense of realism to the scenes. It seems now that Cruise is extending his love for performing his own stunts to his current non-Mission: Impossible project.
The Sun is currently reporting that production on the Top Gun sequel has been put on hold as Cruise plans to learn how to fly an actual fighter jet. While he already has his pilot’s license, Cruise looks to go through training to be able to legitimately fly a fighter jet in order to make the action scenes more realistic. A source close to the production gave some details to the outlet.
“He won’t film all the flight sequences — it’s too dangerous — but he will fly some, making him the first actor in cinema history to do so. The producers would prefer not to put their leading man, not to mention their whole film, at risk.”

Currently, the Top Gun sequel is slated for June 26th, 2020. Time will tell if Cruise’s fighter pilot training will delay it even further. The film stars Cruise reprising his role as “Maverick”, Jennifer Connelly, Miles Teller, Glen Powell, Jon Hamm, Ed Harris and Val Kilmer reprising his role as “Iceman”. Joseph Kosinski (Oblivion, TRON: Legacy) is at the helm as director.
