According to a new report from Variety, Tomb Raider started off its weekend about as strong as expected, with $2.1M in Thursday numbers. For comparison, Maze Runner: The Death Cure launched with $24.5M in its opening weekend after getting $1.5M in Thursday sales. So as it stands, Tomb Raider looks like it could be making anywhere from $25-$30M in its opening weekend, which is about what Warner Bros. and MGM were projecting it to take.
So what does this mean for its weekend rank? As we know, Black Panther has been holding on to its titles for the past four weekends. Last weekend, it only dropped 38.4 percent to hit $40.8M. Should it maintain, it’s hovering around that $25M range. As such, it looks like this will be quite the neck-and-neck race between the two.
But is this enough for Tomb Raider? As it stands, the budget sits at a reported $94M, meaning that it’ll likely need north of $250M to break even, when taking into account its marketing, and the cut the theater will take from it. At this point, it’s very difficult to say whether or not it’ll hit that high bar, as critical response has been split, with its Rotten Tomatoes score sitting at a near-even 49 percent.
I guess we’ll have to wait to see if any fan word-of-mouth develops after this weekend’s opening. Will you be seeing it? Sound off down below!
