Tommy Lee Jones Hated Working With Jim Carrey

Most everyone has had a co-worker they didn’t get along with or just plain out couldn’t stand to be around. According to THR, while appearing on Norm MacDonald Live, actor Jim Carrey told a story about working with Tommy Lee Jones on Batman Forever, and how it was Tommy Lee Jones who wasn’t too fond of him, as Carrey explains below:

“The maitre said, ‘Oh, I hear you’re working with Tommy Lee Jones. He’s over in the corner having dinner.’ I went over and I said, ‘Hey Tommy, how are you doing?’ and the blood just drained from his face. And he got up shaking  — he must have been in mid kill me fantasy or something like that. And he went to hug me and he said, ‘I hate you. I really don’t like you.’ And I said, ‘What’s the problem?’ and pulled up a chair, which probably wasn’t smart. And he said, ‘I cannot sanction your buffoonery.'”

Wow, that is a pretty intense exchange. Jones didn’t try to hide his disdain for Carrey’s “buffonery” at all. I imagine at the time, with Jones being a Hollywood veteran, some of Carrey’s roles, when compared to some of Jones’, may have come off as silly, but to be flat out rude to someone like this is some heavy handed dislike.

Carrey speculated as to why Jones didn’t like him, “I was the star and that was the problem. He’s a phenomenal actor, though. I still love him.”

It appears this road of respect is a one-way street.
