Top 5 Mazes At Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights!

LRM Online was invited to preview Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights Hollywood last Thursday, and I was lucky enough to get the assignment. Having attended once before, I knew what to expect but was blown away by some of the mazes they had this year. They ranged from the original, like Curse of Pandora’s Box, to blockbuster movie adaptations, such as Ghostbusters, to cult horror classics, like the Killer Klowns from Outer Space maze. None disappointed, though the Stranger Things maze likely won’t impress anyone but the biggest fans of the show. The following are my Top 5 mazes, in ascending order:

5. Killer Klowns from Outer Space

Its clowns, inspired by the designs from the Chiodo Brothers film, are detailed and creepy, and the maze makes great use of the original film’s score by John Massari. You can’t go wrong with neon and blacklight, and this maze uses both plenty.

4. Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man

Universal pays homage to some of the monsters behind the studio’s early success. You enter the maze by a rickety old carriage and are then propelled into olden times, where doctors construct monsters out of dead body parts and gypsy curses are real. If you’re a fan of old school Universal monsters, this maze is for you!

3. Ghostbusters

While nowhere near as scare laden as any of the other mazes mentioned here, this one is jam-packed with nostalgia for the comedy classic. From recreations of their firehouse headquarters to the Sedgewick Hotel, this maze hits all the right notes, also bringing back fan-favorite characters Zuul and of course, Slimer.

2. Creepshow

Recreating all of the short film settings from the classic anthology horror movie, this maze is manna for the horror film fan. From the giant, fearsome creature from The Crate to the creepy crawly roaches of They’re Creeping Up on You, every mazegoer will find something to strike fear in their hearts or send chills down their spine.

1. Holidayz in Hell

I might be biased on this one, as I am a huge fan of holiday horror going into it, but Holidayz in Hell blew me away. There’s everything you’d want out of a maze concerning all of the year’s major holidays. Killer Easter bunnies and wicked Leprechauns are only the beginning. Highlights for me were a particularly gruesome Thanksgiving dinner and a whole lot of Christmas horror at the end, including demonic snowmen and everyone’s favorite Yuletide villain, Krampus.

Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights Hollywood is open select nights now through November 3rd. Check it out if you’re in the mood for a scare during the spooky season!
