Playmobil’s Ghostbusters II Ecto-1A is the latest in their series dedicated to the comedic franchise. Previous sets have included the first Ectomobile, the Ghostbusters’ firehouse HQ, and an assortment of spectral villains, and now their latest offering replicates the paranormal investigator’s upgraded ride featured prominently in the 1989 sequel. The car can be outfitted with 3 AAA batteries (not included) to emit the iconic siren and flashing light display from the roof ornaments. In addition, the set includes Playmobil figurines of Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, Winston Zeddemore, and Egon Spengler in their dark gray Ghostbusters II costumes, and outfitted with corresponding proton packs and slime throwers.

The recreation of the Ecto-1A is outstandingly detailed and remarkably accurate. As with the other toys, obvious care went into crafting every component, right down to the taillights, to replicate its appearance in the film. Perhaps one of the cleverest touches are the lenticular stickers that adhere to the side of the roof rack to simulate the multicolored flashing/rotating message signs displaying “We’re Back” and “Call Us At…” Even the flight suits have been meticulously designed—the fact that the belts and elbow pads mirror the costumes is impressive. And finally, the materials are top quality plastic and rubber. The Ecto-1A has a nice heft to it but is still open enough to let all four Ghostbusters figurines ride in it comfortably with space to store all their gear.

There are a few design choices that could potentially frustrate less-than-patient constructors. First, as with the previous model, there is a plethora of stickers to apply and some of the rather tiny ones require a deft hand to get the placement just right. Next, while the instructions are clear and intuitive, some of the pieces that need to be snapped together require a somewhat surprising amount of force at just the right angle. That said, building it correctly under these conditions ensures the Ecto-1A will stay sturdy and together. Finally, the detachable roof rack (which one removes to place the Ghostbusters figurines into the car) has a hose that connects to the side of vehicle. While this is movie-accurate, the tether of sorts is a little awkward and is a change from the previous model.

Playmobil’s Ghostbusters II Ecto-1A is a fantastic addition to any collector’s gallery or young minds that want to create their Ghostbusters stories and adventures. While there are few super minor quibbles about the construction, the overall quality is absolutely outstanding as the finished product looks and feels great.

Final Grade: A
