Trailer: Art Is A Killer Netflix’s Velvet Buzzsaw, Starring Jake Gyllenhaal

I’m not gonna lie. I thought I knew what Velvet Buzzsaw was going to be about when I pressed play on this trailer. It seemed simple enough — it’s a deconstruction of modern art and I expected plenty of tongue-in-cheek knowing humor at the expense of a world I knew nothing about. But perhaps with a couple familiar faces like Jake Gyllenhaal guiding me through, I could enjoy it.

No, that ain’t at all what this movie is about — at least not based on this trailer. An artist dies, and soon after, his paintings seem to speak to tons of people on a deep level, and on closer inspection, it looks like blood was used in the actual paintings. But the weirdness doesn’t end there. These paintings seem to come alive and lash out at their observers, putting tons of lives in danger.

It looks weird as s**t, and I’m interested to see what kind of a mind trip we’ll be in for when the movie actually hits early next month.

Below is the official synopsis to Velvet Buzzsaw:

“Velvet Buzzsaw is a thriller set in the contemporary art world scene of Los Angeles where big money artists and mega-collectors pay a high price when art collides with commerce. Jake Gyllenhaal, Rene Russo, Toni Collette, Zawe Ashton, Tom Sturridge, Natalia Dyer, Daveed Diggs, Billy Magnussen, and John Malkovich star in the new mind-bending film written and directed by Dan Gilroy.”

Velvet Buzzsaw hits Netflix on February 1, 2019.
