Trailer: Dave Bautista Is A Babysitting CIA Operative In My Spy — How Does This NOT Look Terrible?

If you’re a big buff dude in Hollywood, I think you’re contractually-obligated to go head-to-head with a kid in an ironic family comedy at some point in your career. Vin Diesel did it. The Rock did it, though somehow John Cena avoided such a fate. But now Dave Bautista is getting such a treatment, and while I’ll admit it sounds like a horrible idea when saying it aloud, the new trailer for his movie My Spy actually manages to look like a fairly endearing little movie.

It helps that stars Dave Bautista and Chloe Coleman have great chemistry on-screen together. Bautista is a believable agent with a heart of gold, and Coleman’s dry personality really worked in a way I didn’t expect. Kind of like movies from the ’80s and ’90s, it doesn’t look like they’ll be shying away from darker jokes, which I’m totally okay with. Between Bautista’s character seriously contemplating killing the girl to help cover up his role in the CIA and Coleman’s “lie detector” moment, it managed to make me laugh more than I expected.

Below is the official trailer for My Spy:

MY SPY follows JJ a hardened CIA operative (Dave Bautista) who has been demoted and finds himself at the mercy of a precocious 9-year-old girl, named Sophie (Chloe Coleman) where he has been sent undercover begrudgingly to surveil her family. When Sophie discovers hidden cameras in her apartment she uses her tech savviness to locate where the surveillance operation is set. In exchange for not blowing JJ’s cover Sophie convinces him to spend time with her and teach her to be a spy. Despite his reluctance JJ finds he is no match for Sophie’s disarming charm and wit.”
