The time has finally arrived. A new trailer for one of the most original television series is available. True Detective. I can happily say that Season 3 seems more of a return to form for a series that jerked back and forth in time to tell the story of an occult murder and cover up being investigated by the powerhouse duo of Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as Rust Cohle and Marty Hart. Those guys had charisma and seeing them play off one another as Chole quipped about mans true nature, and Hart philandered away his beautiful family. In the trailer, we see the new lead Mahershala Ali in multiple scenes which show him aged significantly.
I sure hope this season offers some of that delightfully creepy horror that lives just beneath the surface of the smiles of townsfolk’s. Call me crazy, but I feel like True Detective is the spiritual successor to David Lynch’s awesome Twin Peaks. I mean couldn’t you see Rust Cohle and Detective Cooper both operating from the same spectrum? Remember when you stare into the abyss, it stares back, or something like that.
Set to debut this January 2019, season 3 of True Detective will have to be a lot stronger than season 2’s lackluster twists. Don’t get me wrong, the season was good, but it felt like it certainly lacked the charm of season 1. Let’s call season 2 polarizing. I am hoping that when viewed together, each season is touching upon the occult thread which intertwines throughout the police investigations in each city. But as it stands, I’d best describe season 2 in the immortal words of Russ Cohle.
“This place is like somebody’s memory of a town, and the memory is fading. It’s like there was never anything here but jungle.”
Maybe years from now, when the series is 7 seasons in, we will look back at the quiet genius Nic Pizzolatto was planning from the outset.
What we know about the plot comes from Deadline.
“Season 3 of True Detective will tell the story of a macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks, and a mystery that deepens over decades and plays out in three separate time periods. Ali will play the lead role of Wayne Hays, a state police detective from Northwest Arkansas”.
