Tyrese Gibson Continues To Ride The Hobbs & Shaw Hate Train

You may recall that when the spin-off film Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw first started to gain momentum, they had one actor speaking out vehemently against it: Tyrese Gibson. He lamented the splitting up of the Fast Family and was insistent that this wasn’t what the fans wanted. But was he right?

This past weekend saw Hobbs & Shaw open to over $60 million domestically and $180 million worldwide. It’s a great number for most movies, but a bit disappointing for one billing itself as a Fast & Furious spin-off. Even with the Chinese market still set to open, it’s hard not to see this as even a TAD disappointing, even if there is plenty of room for improvement for weeks to come.

Tyrese Gibson quickly took to Instagram to share his thoughts in a now-deleted post (via theshaderoom). Here is some of what he had to say.

“I have to show my respects for one thing…. He tried…….. Folks called me a hater….. And attacked me for speaking out……. Breaking up the family clearly doesn’t have the value that one would assume it does…….. You know that maybe just maybe… The Rock and the crew will come dance with us agian for #Fast10 we can hug it all out and get back to giving the true fans who have supported this franchise for 20 years WHAT they want……… No hating I’m just pointng out the facts……. #FastFamily has more value as the #FastFamily its ok… The Rock is still one of the biggest movie stars in the world and he’s not hurting for work…. I have 2 franchise films and he has at least 15 so there won’t be any tears on his pillow tonight….. 180 million dollar global opening on Hobbs and Shaw is NOT a win……”

So, first up. Regardless of how much he insists he is not hating…it’s clear that he’s hating. He clearly did not want this spin-off to succeed and didn’t waste any time in declaring what he deemed “NOT a win.” But that’s not to say he doesn’t raise at least one good point.

One strength of the Fast & Furious franchise is the sheer breadth of diverse characters. Even if we all talk smack about Vin Diesel going on about “family,” the cast is wide enough that there’s usually at least one character audiences can connect with, and therefore more likely for audiences to hop on board each entry.

Hobbs & Shaw did not have that breadth. It had three big stars in Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, and Idris Elba. Is it diverse? Yes. But it doesn’t have the sheer number of the mainline films. Will this ultimately be something that prevents it from actually being a true win for the franchise as whole?
