Venom 2: Sony Hires Writer, May Need New Director

We all made jokes. We all talked smack. But the end of the day, Sony was the one who was laughing all the way to the bank when Venom finally hit theaters last year. And you know what? The movie itself wasn’t the worst thing in the world, either. It was no Avengers: Infinity War, but it was a bit of harmless entertainment, in spite of all the s**t I talked.

Given that the movie broke $850 million at the worldwide box office, more than covering its minimal $100 million budget, and securing a sequel for the studio, who had already expressed more than a willingness to capitalize on this pocket universe outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It was only a matter of time until we got an official confirmation.

According to Variety, we are that much closer to seeing the film realized, as Sony Pictures has tapped Kelly Marcel, one of the first movie’s screenwriters, to pen the script for Venom 2. There was no official figure thrown out, but it does sound like it was fairly substantial.

Set to return are Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, and Woody Harrelson, the latter of whom was teased as Carnage at the end of that first movie. But there may be one key change to the creative team in the form of the director. The outlet states that sources say Sony may be searching for a new helmer, as Ruben Fleischer, who directed the first film, will be busy with Zombieland 2.

Are you happy to see them moving forward with a sequel, and are you sad to see Fleischer potentially step away? Let us know down below!
