Venom Director Says Film Will Show Most Violent, Vicious Portrayal Of Any Marvel Character Seen Before

So what’s the deal with Venom? That’s a great question. We really don’t know at this point. Yes, the movie is coming out very soon, yes it stars Tom Hardy, and yes it looks to be going darker than most MCU films, but we don’t know how far they’re going to actually push it. Will they be willing to go all out with an R rating or not?

In the past, no one has been willing to commit to saying what the film will be rated, and reports indicate Sony may want to keep their options open by pushing PG-13 envelope without going into full R territory. But what does director Ruben Fleischer have to say about this? Here’s what he revealed in his interview with ComicBook.com.

“Our movie wants to honor the comics as close as we can, tonally. In the comics, he bites people’s heads off and eats brains. It would be weird to make a movie with Venom if he wasn’t doing that. We tried to honor it as closely as possible. This is definitely a darker, more violent, more vicious Marvel character than I think anyone’s ever seen before.”

Hm…while he does emphasize staying true to the spirit of the comic, all I see there is a man unwilling to commit because the decision has not yet been made. Can the film still ultimately be rated R? Absolutely. But until the studio commits one way or another, he’ll likely be saying similar things to this until the movie comes out.

Honestly, it’s a shame. Without Peter Parker and the MCU being in the mix, they really have the opportunity to make their own world, but their unwillingness to rule out big bucks down the line is clouding the potential vision for this movie, and more than anything I’ve seen from the movie in its trailers, this is the biggest indication I see that this movie will fail. At the end of the day, they don’t seem to be making the best decisions for the characters.
