Venom KILLS IT In China With $34.2 Million Opening Day

I know what you’re thinking. It’s sad that we live in a world where only Marvel Studios films can be successful. What with their high quality and standards, it’s made it hard for truly mediocre stories made as a quick cash grab to succeed. Venom is the latest example of this very trend. It quickly bombed at the U.S. box office and has since faded into obscurity.

Hang on a second. I’ve just received a note from my researcher, and it turns out everything I’d just said was absolutely wrong. Venom, the critically-panned film was received much better by many fans (including our own Fox Troilo), and over the course of its theatrical run in the U.S. and many overseas markets, it took in over $540 million, a solid figure for its $100 million price tag.

However, all this success came without the film being launched in one key market: China. Now, the film has opened, and according to Forbes, has had a record $34.2 million opening day. That’s right, $34.2 million in its first day alone, which is a record that surpasses Avengers: Age of Ultron‘s $33 million opening and Star Wars: The Force Awakens‘ $33 million.

With this opening weekend success story on the way, you can bet this film will easily cross the $600 million mark. But how high will this thing rise? The outlet speculates that it could surpass the likes of Justice League ($659 million), Amazing Spider-Man 2 ($709 million), and even Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($714 million) by the end of its box office run. Anyone else worried about an emboldened Sony heading to the negotiation table with Disney next year? This writer sure is!
