For years, we’ve been hearing rumors about a new Matrix film in the works. There have been rumblings about everything ranging from sequels to reboots to reimaginings. Given the nature of the franchise, there are a variety of different ways things can go, so it’s hard to rule almost any aspect out completely. But what of the Wachowskis? These were the visionary directors who created the original trilogy, so would they be involved?

It was never confirmed, but pretty much everything out there seemed to indicate that the filmmaking duo would not be involved in the project. But is that the case? Well, it’s always hard to say with things like this. There have been rumors for so long, it’s very possible that, at any one stage, they could have been involved and then not involved later down the line. But, as of this writing, it looks like they could very well be involved, as John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum director told Yahoo! Movies UK.

“I’m super happy that the Wachowskis are not just doing a Matrix, but they’re expanding what we all loved. And if it’s anywhere near the level of what they’ve already done, it wouldn’t take more than a call to go, ‘Hey, we want you to be a stunt guy’ and I would probably go and get hit by a car.”

This statement was obviously a bit of a shock to the outlet, so they followed the question up, asking if the pair would be directing.

“I’m not sure of the overall. I’m not sure if Lana is.”

“Yeah[, they are involved]. And if they wanted help, I would absolutely put down whatever I was doing to help them.”

It’s worth noting that Stahelski himself worked on the Matrix films way early on in his career, where he acted as Keanu Reeves’ stunt double. Clearly, he’s kept in touch with Lilly and Lana Wachowski since then.

Personally, I think it would be a ballsy move by the studio to have the Wachowskis work on the film. Don’t get me wrong, they are visionary and talented filmmakers, but they go all-in on their visions, making projects that don’t necessarily get accepted by the majority of mainstream moviegoers. They go big, they go weird, and they go different. And they’ve only done that more so in the years since the last Matrix film wrapped up — for better and worse (Speed Racer is still one of my favorite films).
