Welp, Disney Is Assuming Full Control Of Own Hulu Now

We all saw this coming. With Disney taking a majority share of Hulu with its partial acquisition of 21st Century Fox, it seemed only a matter of time before they take the remaining piece of the pie held by Comcast. Now, according to TheWrap, the two titans have reached a deal that will give the House of Mouse full control of Hulu.

The outlet states that the two have entered a “put/call” agreement, the terms of which are broken down:

“As early as January 2024, Comcast can require Disney to buy NBCUniversal’s interest in Hulu and Disney can require NBCUniversal to sell that interest to Disney for its fair market value at that future time.”

The price the two companies have agreed on for Comcast’s 33% share is $5.8 billion, which values Hulu at $27.5 billion, which is a hefty sum.

“Hulu represents the best of television, with its incredible array of award-winning original content, rich library of popular series and movies, and live TV offerings,” Disney CEO Bob Iger said in a statement. “We are now able to completely integrate Hulu into our direct-to-consumer business and leverage the full power of The Walt Disney Company’s brands and creative engines to make the service even more compelling and a greater value for consumers.”

For those worried that Comcast will pull their NBC shows any time soon, they have agreed to extend their content license with Hulu through 2024…though starting next year they will be able to put some of that content non-exclusively on its own streaming service.

This all makes sense. Disney’s own Disney+ streaming service is very much a family-oriented service, and some of wondered where their less family-friendly content will live. This pretty much confirms all speculation, though it does leave the doors open for yet another streaming service for audiences to have to buy.
