West Side Story – Casting Notice Released For Spielberg’s Remake

After last Friday’s news that Steven Spielberg’s next project was likely Indiana Jones 5, followed by West Side Story, now it is beginning to look like the opposite may be true.

Broadway World shares a casting notice for West Side Story. Sure, Spielberg has been rumored to be working on Indiana Jones 5 before West Side Story, but either that rumor is off, or he’s got some serious multi-tasking skills going on (though it’s Spielberg, so I wouldn’t be surprised).

The casting notice states that casting director Cindy Tolan is looking for actors to play the musical’s four leading roles: Maria (18-20), Tony (18-23). Bernado (20-24) and Anita (20-24 years). The notice needs all the actors to be able to sing — obviously, this is the musical West Side Story — while Maria, Anita, and Bernado must be able to speak Spanish.

Let’s also hope they are looking for racially appropriate actors on this one. Spielberg doesn’t need a white-washing scandal on his hands!

The notice also confirms that Tony Kushner (Lincoln, Munich) is currently penning the screenplay.

Look for more West Side Story news soon, but hopefully we get some official word on Indy 5 as well before long.

Are you excited for a Spielberg remake of West Side Story, or is he not the man for the job? Or, is a remake simply something you don’t want to see? Let us know in the comment section below!
