Why Birds Of Prey’s Official Title Is So Long, According To Margot Robbie

Last week, Margot Robbie took to Instagram to show off a photo of the title page of the screenplay for one of DC’s upcoming live-action flicks Birds of Prey. In the photo, we saw some handwritten scribbles in parentheses. At first, I thought it was Margot just goofing off under the guise of Harley Quinn, but it turns out that wasn’t just her goofing off — she was actually revealing the title of the movie.

We’d been calling the film Birds of Prey, but in reality, its title has been Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). Yup, not only is the title long as shit, but instead of utilizing a typical colon that separates the title from its subtitle, it went full-on into weird territory with its parentheses. But there’s no way this is real, right? Jimmy Fallon asked Margot Robbie if it was, indeed, real. Here was her response:

“That’s real. That’s the title. It’s not a very serious movie so we thought the title should reflect that. Birds of Prey makes it sound very serious and that’s kind of Harley adding her ‘Hey, don’t worry. I’m in this, too.'”

I honestly hadn’t thought about that. I guess when you look at the name Birds of Prey from the outside it does come across as a title you’d hear in an ultra-serious thriller from the 1990s. By adding in that extra parenthetical bit, you reveal upfront what kind of movie it is. And given how familiar audiences are starting to get with the whole fourth-wall-breaking stuff thanks to Deadpool, it kinda works.

Robbie then went on to confirm the film will be hitting production early next year. I have to say, as someone who wasn’t totally all-in, I’m at least intrigued with the way this is shaping up. But what do you think? Let us know your thoughts down below!

Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is set to hit theaters on February 7, 2020.
