Why Isn’t Batgirl In Birds Of Prey? Here’s Your Answer

Batgirl Directors Confirm Batman Role - But Not Which Batman?

Birds of Prey will be hitting theaters this coming February, and while promotional material is continuing to roll in many have wondered: where the heck is Batgirl?

In 1996 DC brought us the first partnership which began with Black Canary and Barbara Gordon in her role of Oracle.  Even though she wasn’t Batgirl when she became one of the founding members, many thought she may feature in some form.  When the characters were released and she wasn’t on the team sheet but Cassandra Cain was, some got their hopes up that Batgirl would still feature as Cain has previously donned the role.  With Ella Jay Basco’s Cain not being a deadly assassin, but a street kid, the film definitely has its own interpretation of the team, which does not involve Batgirl.

Collider visited the set of Birds of Prey and had the chance to speak with producers Sue Kroll and Bryan Unkeless where they spoke about the lack of Batgirl in the film:

Kroll stated, “You’ll not see Batgirl. Just gonna say ‘No.’ So why not? This is a studio question. That character’s in development on her own film, right?”

Warner Bros. had been developing a Joss Whedon Batgirl movie since 2017, but he has since dropped out leading to Christina Hodson taking over.

Unkeless spoke of the matter as well, “But a lot of it also has just originated from Margot and Christina kind of having this fun, open canvas or being attracted to the characters. So there certainly are some of those studio primers, but this, by and large, is, ‘This character’s awesome!’ You know? And Christina and Margot would get excited about these characters and it led us to the people we have on this wall.”

I do have to say that I am curious if this film will be accurate to the source material or have its own direction and interpretation of the characters. I am unsure how I feel about the film.  Visually it looks extremely unique. I wouldn’t say I am necessarily excited to see it, but do want to see what it has to offer and hope that it leans heavily on source material.

What are your thoughts?  Do you wish Batgirl was in Birds of Prey?  Are you excited to see the film?  Leave your thoughts in the usual spot, and thanks for reading!
