Why Joe Carnahan Left Bad Boys For Life

Bad Boys for Life is finally happening. It’s taken well over 15 years for this third entry in the franchise to actually happen, but every day that pass, its showing up in theaters seems like a greater and greater possibility. But that’s not to say there weren’t some casualties along the way. Joe Carnahan, the director of the movie The Grey, was attached at one point to take on the flick, and as you likely know, he stepped down some time ago. But what was the reason?

“I just know myself, man,” Carnahan revealed to Collider in a recent podcast interview. “And I thought what we were doing at that point was the law of diminishing returns. I wasn’t servicing the story that I was really excited about telling, that the studio had green-lit. And again, this isn’t to throw shade at Will — it’s your face on the poster, it’s your name on the poster, you need to do things the way you want them done. That won’t work for me.”

“The end of the my original Bad Boys script, is one of the best endings I’ve ever written for any movie.”

On the whole, it sounds like the studio and Will Smith wanted to push the film in a certain direction for the brand and the star, and Carnahan himself was excited about a different aspect of the story…so creative differences, though it doesn’t sound like Carnahan has much ill will toward anyone.

Carnahan then went on to discuss a $12 million action set piece he had planned on making, in which he would throw shade at a certain Oscar movie.

“I said, hey, you know, they’re on the freeway shooting each other. You know they have one of those moving billboards? I hated The Danish Girl movie so much, I said, ‘Can you make a poster for The Danish Girl and they blow it apart? And they were like ‘yeah, we can do that.'”
