Will Amazon’s Lord Of The Rings Chronicle The Fall Of Númenor?

When it was first announced that Amazon would be revisiting the world of Middle-Earth in a Lord of the Rings series, most folks were understandably skeptical. Hell, I think the word “skeptical” is perhaps a bit soft for what many fans were feeling. Lord of the Rings was a trilogy of films that marked a high bar of quality that no one had been able to match in the high fantasy genre since. Even (and especially) Jackson’s follow-up Hobbit films paled horribly in comparison.

So why bother jumping back into this with the same story? Well, from everything we hear, this won’t actually be a strict adaptation of the book, but rather an adaptation of the world and its stories leading up to the events in Lord of the Rings. So there is a lot of room for them to expand on the mythology on the screen. So, we are at the point where we virtually know nothing about what to expect. And then the official Twitter account for the series went and shared an odd tweet. The text was the oft-quoted saying that was engraved on the ring itself, but what caught many people’s attention was the map.

As you can see at the bottom left, there is the island of Númenor, and in a follow-up tweet, the account says “Welcome to the Second Age.”

Personally, my knowledge of Middle-Earth begins with The Hobbit novel and ends with Lord of the Rings novels, so the greater history of Middle-Earth still escapes me. But the folks over at ComicBook.com were able to break it down a bit more. Númenor is an island established during the Second Age.

Greedy men in search of eternal life and exploration would sail to Middle-Earth and take over sections, and the island itself would meet its downfall, with its survivors going on to found Gondor and Arnor.

So will this series see Númenor at its peak, and will we see its downfall and the founding of Gondor and Arnor? More importantly, how will all this tie directly into the series? Regardless, it looks like Amazon is digging deep into the Tolkien mythology, so fans of the books outside of Lord of the Rings may be in for a real treat.
