Willy Wonka Film Confirmed To Be A Prequel

For many movie fans out there, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is one of those films that lands on a list of movies that should never be remade. Of course, the source material was tapped a second time for the Tim Burton-directed Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, a more faithful take on the Roald Dahl novel, but a less beloved one all the same. It goes without saying that a third take would be less than well received.

But if there is one man who can take it on, it’s Paul King, the director behind the delightful Paddington live-action films. Way back in February, it was announced that he would be handling a movie called Willy Wonka, but what would the movie be about? Already with the title, it was implied that it would be a slightly different take, but what kind of take would it be? Speaking with Collider, producer David Heyman gave an update on what we can expect.

“We are still trying to figure out how to tell that story, what the story is. It’s a prequel, it’s not a sequel. What makes Willy—when we find him at the chocolate factory doing the golden ticket, where is he before that? What leads him to that place where he’s locked himself away?… It’s how does he get there? So we’re playing around with that.”

This is a bit of an odd take. While Dahl did write a sequel to the original novel, as far as I know, there has been no real delving into the events prior to the events in that first book, apart from that weird flashbacks in the Tim Burton movie. As such, it is interesting…but do we actually care?

Will audiences really care about how he became the eccentric chocolatier? My gut says no, but given Paul King’s track record, I may be open to at least giving this a chance.
