X-Men: Dark Phoenix Was Being Rewritten While In Production

Writing any story is hard enough as it is, and adding several more stages to a story’s execution can be even harder. We like to make fun of movies that suck, but at the end of the day, it’s an incredibly difficult thing to pull off, so it’s a wonder we get ANY good movies at all. But at the end of the day, it all comes back to the script. Studios work hard to try and fix these things, but even then, they’re sometimes left with a dud of a film because they just can’t get it right.

It’s no wonder that there are countless stories of filmmakers working with writers while on the set of a movie. The latest movie for that to have taken place is the final X-Men film from a Fox, Dark Phoenix. Written and directed by long-time franchise shepherd, Simon Kinberg, he apparently worked tirelessly to try and make this the best film possible.

Speaking with Screen Rant, star Sophie Turn said, “Simon and I would sit down for two hours every day and just comb through each page of the script. There was rewriting being done all the time.”

Jessica Chastain, another star of the film, added, “You could have a conversation and something comes from that and then the next morning, Simon would show up to work and say, ‘hey, I wrote some pages that I think could be interesting for this direction we’re going.'”

While I haven’t seen the film myself, based on the reactions from critics, it doesn’t sound Kinberg is getting the reaction he’d hoped for. While most reviews aren’t damning of it, many do seem underwhelmed by the film, which is unfortunate

But is this all thanks to rewrites? Eh, it’s hard to say at this point. Once I’ve seen the film, I can certainly perform some kind of postmortem on it. Given the high highs and low lows of the franchise, it’s certainly worth digging into.
